Get healthy

Posted by: Jonathan Hopson   in Personal

I saw this title “Spring Hill Named Third Skinniest City in Nation” and had some thoughts. First, who did they contact (obviously they didn’t contact me). Second, why don’t I fit into that study? That’s one I can answer.

I like food. Sometimes I like it too much. Pizza, ribs, non fat-free types of food are my favs. Why cook at home when you can drive through Sonic or Burger King? During the summer, I was the chef for the kids. Our kids like to eat mac n cheese, pizza, anything fried, and clumps of junk food. So since Memorial Day, I have gained close to 12 lbs. For someone who was already overweight since college, it just added more on.

I think I know why it all happened. I was depressed. Simply put, the summer slump at church was already hitting, we had a faithful family at church move away, and finances at home were getting very tight. Simply put, I lost focus and got depressed. During the last 2 weeks of July that focus returned and now I’m more determined than ever to get to my healthy weight. No longer am I going to allow food to be a crutch during tough times!!!!

My goal is to lose 20 lbs by October and then nail that last 10 by December 6. I guess you can say I’m wierd because most people wait and do that as a New Year’s Resolution. Frankly, there’s not a reason for me to wait that long. Between now and October, I have to lose 2.2 lbs each week. That’s the first section of my journey. I’ve already knocked out the first 2.5 lbs last week. Just a little more to go.

BTW, check out Perry’s posts about weight loss (here and here). Thanks Perry for the inspiration!

Last lecture professor has died of cancer

Posted by: Jonathan Hopson   in Personal

Randy Pausch, a computer science professor whose “last lecture” about facing terminal cancer became an Internet sensation and a best-selling book, has died. He was 47.

I watched Randy’s lecture at least twice and each time it moved me. It really makes me wonder what I would say if I knew it was the last time to share my heart, passion, and beliefs. Since most people who read my blog are pastors, I’ll ask this question of you: What would you preach on if you knew it was your last sermon ever?

During last Sunday’s At the Movies message, I thought about my Bucket List and what it would look like. Here’s what I came up with so far:

  1. Travel to Australia
  2. Tour as many sites as I can in the UK
  3. Drive a Ferrari
  4. Take a few laps around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway
  5. Visit all 50 states - see where I’ve visited here

There’s a lot more I’d add to this list, but it’s a start. My takeaway from this whole thing is to not wait to live your life to the fullest. Start living it today.

My old sweatshirt

Posted by: Jonathan Hopson   in Elevation Church, Personal

With the temperature drop, I pulled out a sweatshirt so I could work in the garage. Tucked under some seasoned ones, I found this.

sweatshirt

Do you remember back in the day when Body Equipment sweatshirts were cool? Were they ever cool? I don’t wear it now because I’ve grown out of it in more ways than one. But finding this really made me think about all the stuff we keep with us for “sentimental value.” I mean, I first got this shirt when I was a junior in high school (1992). Seeing it, reminds me of some of the good times I had back then. In reality though, it’s just baggage that I’ve carried with me wherever I go. I’ve lived in 5 states since I first got this shirt, but somehow it still makes the move with us.

So how do you break this cycle of reliving better times and living in the moment? If you or someone you know needs a breakthrough in life, join us this Sunday at Elevation Church for week one of Hostage. See you then!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Posted by: Jonathan Hopson   in Personal

I hope that your new year has started off great. Alicia and I are gearing up to watch the Big Orange take on Wisconsin in the Outback Bowl. For lunch, we’ll stir up a pot of blackeyed peas for good luck. If you’re from the South, you know this tradition. If not, click here.

I can’t wait to see what God has in store for Elevation Church this year. I believe that it’ll be one we’l remember for years to come.

Yep, I am now 32 years old. Alicia gave me a special gift: Guitar Hero 3. Tonight, the kids called to sing Happy Birthday.

    If I were a superhero

Posted by: Jonathan Hopson   in Personal

Your Superpower Should Be Super Strength

You’re tough, stubborn, and strong in both mind and body.

You are able to survive almost anything…

And you don’t come out worse for the wear.

Your power is evident - and unsurprisingly, you’re pretty intimidating! Why you would be a good superhero: No one could match you in hand to hand combat

Your biggest problem as a superhero: Actually getting supervillains to show up to fight.

    Getting Healthy

Posted by: Jonathan Hopson   in Personal

Today, I joined Anytime Fitness. I’ve been wanting to lose a few and get in shape. My primary reason is because I want to be around when my kids get older and have kids of their own. I want to live life to the fullest when I’m in my 80’s.

My goal is to become a healthy 195. That means I have to lose around 30 to get to that point. No more Domino’s or those Maccachino’s(sp) from StarBUCKS. Keep me in your prayers!
