We first began using LifeChurch.tv’s At The Movies material on July 1, 2007 (our first experience as Elevation Church). We noticed right away that we were going to love this partnership. Although it was our own experience, I did not speak. This decision was made months before July 1.
Alicia and I attended LifeChurch.tv in Hendersonville for about 6 months before Elevation Church started. During that time, we took notes on everything, served on various teams, and met with the leaders regularly. In one of my first meetings with Andrew, he challenged me with the thought about my speaking. “Could I give that up so that I can better pastor people.”
I’ll admit that I really like speaking. But I also knew that I could be a better pastor by changing the 20-30 hours working on a message to investing it in relationships. With my giftedness, I am better at building relationships and doing behind the scenes stuff. Now, I’m able to spend more time with people than I ever have as a pastor and that you can’t put a price tag on.
Making this decision was tough. Pride creeped in and said that “without me speaking, it won’t work.” There were also some financial implications with it. As a church plant, would our donors agree? So the choice had to be made. After much prayer, we decided that on day 1, we would use the messages from LifeChurch.tv. And we haven’t looked back. Our donors are still with us and the majority of our people too. I still give talks on occasion and get worked up like I always do. When I do, I still stay up at midnight on Saturday night worrying about it. Some things never change.
