I have to say that I didn’t like church as a kid. I probably faked being sick to get out of church more than school. Still, going to church as a kid really impacted my life.

Here’s a story about why families going to church really helps to shape a child’s thoughts about church. It also helps parents do their job well. You can read the article here, but I’ll give you the bullet points:

  1. Going to church helps to provide parents a social network. This helps improve their parenting skills.
  2. The values and norms that circulate in congregations are mostly self sacrificing and pro -family.
  3. The relationships that parents have at church help infuse parents with sacred meaning and significance.

There are many times where Alicia and I have as parents felt like we were on an island. Totally alone. I’m so thankful for the church for a number of reasons. This specific one is near the top on my list. It’s my prayer that our church will specialize in these three and many more.
