I have a habit of having the tv or radio on while I work. It seems like I work better with noise in the background. A couple nights ago, I stopped typing and watched the preview of Reign Over Me. It’s a movie about a guy (Adam Sandler) whose family died in 9/11. He lost his memory of it and runs into an old college roomate (Don Cheadle). His friend cares for him and urges him to tell his story. After his story is told, the real healing begins.

I don’t know much about this movie, but the preview captivated me. Each of us have our story to tell. Your story may consist of many joyful and painful moments. Some parts of the story are like those often told in a fairytale. Other parts are the dark tales of our experience. Still, it’s our story. And no one can refute it.

I meet with a group of pastors once a month for mentoring and growth as a person. We’ve taken the DISC test and many other personality tests. We ask the tough questions to stir the conversation. As I learn and share more about my personal journey, I grow more into my own skin. I stop trying to be someone I’m not. It’s like Jesus says, “You will know the truth of who you are and the truth of whose you are that will set you free.” (my edit) It’s an Adam & Eve experience in the Garden. God sees us for who we really are and we see Him for who He really is.

When you understand and share your story, you take off the mask of inauthenticity and become yourself. It is in your story that you can “know yourself.” So Neo, know thyself.
