Had a great conference call today with other church planters. One of them reminded us about perseverance. He said that he personally takes comfort in the fact that it takes time to do great things for God. He said “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” To nail it home, he reminded us about the childhood story about the tortoise and the hare. In the end, the slow moving tortoise beats the much faster hare.
I think of the Apostle Paul when he said:
Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
-Philippians 3:12-14
In order to keep persevering in life, parenting, church, or whatever, my focus must be clear. If I am going to persevere through the trying times of life, my focus must remain steady on the future. If my focus gets too short-sighted, I’ll think of myself as a failure. But if my focus is future-oriented, then I’ll remain steadfast at what I’m supposed to do. Good words to remind all of us that God is in it for the long haul. And so should we.
